Fundraiser: Chelsea Smith

The Starfish Pack Backpack Program was created in response to teachers hearing the cry of their students. Teachers were heartbroken to hear their students were coming to class Monday morning hungry, reporting that they had not eaten over the weekend. \n\nPenticton Rotary Club teamed up with Save-On foods in April 2017 and started with funding through Community Foundation to supply 10 backpacks to 1 local elementary school. We have since grown to 34 backpacks delivered weekly by volunteers to 4 local Penticton elementary schools. Every week empty backpacks are picked up from the schools, delivered to Save-On to be filled with food for the weekend. The backpacks are then delivered back to the schools on Fridays to go home with kids for the weekend. Then to restart again the next week. The cost of a backpack for 1 year to feed a student is $525. Please see links below for more info and how to donate. \n\nhttp://starfishpack.com/penticton/\nhttps://youtu.be/8eQD6jsgtps

Chelsea Mae comes from a family devoid of artists (or so they’d say), and was often thought to have been switched at birth for the creative bones in her body.  She first fell for paint at age 3 finger painting her blind dog blue, and clay at age 9 carving the chunks that fell off the mountain behind her house. She fell for photography when she was old enough to own a camera, and silk screening, book making, and TShirt printing in grade 8 Graphic Design class. She fell in love with making dishes and hand spun pottery in university, and eggshell painting when living in Vietnam after that. She has made books out of driftwood, antlers into coat racks, cucumbers into pickles (did I mention she started her own canning business on the Sunshine Coast?).  For Chelsea Mae, art isn’t any one thing. It isn’t a particular media to excel in, or a style to be restricted to. The beauty of art is that it’s attainable by all, anywhere, any time.

Chelsea Mae has also been a teacher in classrooms internationally, locally in public schools, and privately in art studios, and thrives on teasing out the inner artist in all her students.  If you are interested in private art sessions, adding a Chelsea Mae’d piece to your collection, or would simply like to take a visual jaunt through some of her visual creations, please visit chelseamaed.wordpress.com  for more.
